Welcome to Reception
Our main ethos is to plan our curriculum with the interests of the children in mind. Your children help us to plan their learning! We believe that we can achieve a high level of engagement, learning outcomes and mind- set towards learning through adapting our styles of teaching to suit your child’s passions.
Throughout their time at Milton Primary your child’s emotional well-being is at the forefront. We believe that a happy and settled child will be open to learning opportunities. We play alongside the children and put words to the learning that they are living.

The staff will be available every day after school for any quick queries. If you have any queries please catch us after school to alleviate any worries straight away, but please wait until we have dismissed ALL of the children first. If you need a more detailed chat, please arrange a mutually convenient time.
Book Bags-Planners/Communication & Reading Books
Please ensure that your child has these in school everyday. The Reception Team will stick the Weekly Newsletter into your child’s planner on a Monday so that you are aware of what is happening during the coming week and the learning experiences planned for the week. We also include ways that you can help your child at home. Please also use your child’s book bag to return any permission/reply slips.
Children read daily through our Phonics and Literacy activities but our individual reading day is on a Monday. Our expectations are that the children read frequently with you at home and that you comment in their planner. We only change reading books when a comment has been made.
We believe that it is very important for the children to see the close relationship between home and school. Therefore home learning tasks will be set half termly with a Literacy, Maths and Topic based activity to complete. They will mostly be practical family tasks. Please comment in the comment box about how your child found the tasks and the things that they said whilst completing them.
At the end of each half term a Parent/Child Contribution sheet will be sent home for you to complete with your child over the holiday. Please complete and send back on the first day of the new half term. We love to hear of our children’s achievements at home…
Please make sure that Home Learning is returned on the stated date on the task sheet. We love to look at the learning children have completed at home and read your comments.
In your child’s planner is a yellow sheet of stars for their achievements outside of school. Please fill this in so we can talk to your child about their stars when we are reading with them.
Secret Storyteller (Thursday at 2.30pm)
This is one of children’s favourite times of the week. Whose grown up will be coming into our classroom to read to us today? Secret Storyteller is when you read your child’s favourite bedtime story to their class. It encourages positive images of reading to children and also helps their Communication and Language skills. If you are interested in being a Secret Storyteller please inform the academy office.
In what other ways can you support us:-
Please make sure that all clothing (including shoes and PE kit) is named also water bottles, book bags and school bags.
Please ensure the children have good habits with regards to sleeping during school days. Their tiredness has a huge impact on their well-being and ability to learn.
Please send your child with a filled water bottle for them to have in class and we will supply fresh fruit daily and milk.
50p Friday to help us fund some of the exciting learning opportunities that we provide.
