Year 5

Welcome to Year 5

Throughout your child’s time in Year 5, we will be developing their independence and confidence in line with our BIG 5 values as we understand just how crucial they are to achieving lifelong success. We also understand how important it is to take risks in our learning; nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The Year 5 Team

The teachers in our year group are Miss Erskine and Miss Thompson who are supported by Mrs Barnett and Mrs Gilford.

Over the course of this year, we will be focussing on equipping the children with knowledge and skills they need for the real world.

In addition to the Big 5 (Positivity, Bouncebackability, Knowing Your Impact, Setting HUGE Goals and Personal Responsibility), we have established our own class charter that is to be followed to ensure a happy and productive learning environment is maintained. Independent learning will also be encouraged this year with the aim that children feel confident enough to take on new challenges and push themselves further.

We look forward to a year of hard work and fun and watching every member of Year 5 flourish and grow. We truly believe that every child has the right to achieve individual excellence.

Your Teachers’ Favourite Books

Miss Erskine – Holes (Louis Sachar)

Stanley Yelnats is under a curse; a curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnatses. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes. Will they ever find out what they are digging for?

Miss Thompson – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (J.K. Rowling)

The boy-wizard, Harry Potter, faces his most difficult challenge yet – defeating the soulless Dementors and the prisoner that escaped from Azkaban! Along with his best friends, Ron and Hermione, Harry must develop his magical skills to be in with a chance of being victorious. One question rings in his head: who can he trust?

We hope that you find the information that we have shared on our class page useful, but if you have any questions or would like to speak to a member of our team, please email milton@learningvillage.org.uk and a Year 5 teacher will be in touch!
